apply missing critical patch updates

Auditor scanning found we have some critical patch updates (CPUs) missing in our database from July 2008 to July 2011.

My question are:

Is it necessary to apply all of these missing CPUs or just apply the latest one let's say only one of July 2011?

Can the latest one cover all of old ones?

Is it possible to check the CPUs status by ourself without specific auditing scan software?
