end of communication channel error

The application we are having is running into a ora-03113 end of communication channel error.

I checked the tnsnames.ora file and everything looks ok. Then, I checked the alert log file, I am getting the following entries:

Fatal NI connect error 12170.

  VERSION INFORMATION:
        TNS for Solaris: Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
        Oracle Bequeath NT Protocol Adapter for Solaris: Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
        TCP/IP NT Protocol Adapter for Solaris: Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
  Time: 14-OCT-2011 10:14:01
  Tracing not turned on.
  Tns error struct:
    ns main err code: 12535

TNS-12535: TNS:operation timed out
    ns secondary err code: 12560
    nt main err code: 505

TNS-00505: Operation timed out
