DOES INSTALLING 11G SET A FLAG ?

I installed 11g on a Windows 2003 server. I didn't upgrade the database at the time of installation. After deleting the 11g software I restored the pre upgrade backup of the database (10g) and then tried to restart the 10g database using 10g. The database will only restart if it's in upgrade mode. I've tried recreating the control files and running the 10g version of the catalog, catproc and upgrade scripts but it still insists on being in upgrade mode, which leads me to think there is still a flag set somewhere indcating it needs an upgrade.

it's not a big problem as it's a test database that I use for working through the upgrade path but it is puzzling.
