Use of Item Dimension Groups in JDE Warehouse Management

Can anyone provide some insight into best practices for use of item dimension groups in JDE?  I have users wanting to use these parameters for identifying packaging specifications.  I bellieve that it is more aptly utilized for warehouse capacity analysis.  Your thoughts on proper use of these parameters would be appreciated.
