Any fix for special characters in BI Publisher?

We are on R12.0.3 and some of our items have special characters in the description.  PO Output for communication fails and I assume other documents will fail if we tried to print a sales order or invoice for the items.  Has there been any fix for removing or printing the special characters in BI Publisher.  There are a lot of documents, notes and technet notes but some of them are pretty old.  I would think that Oracle has solved the problem by now.
