How to update an existing NIS user

I am new to Solaris and I've inheriited a Solaris NIS domain.  The existing users accounts are all NIS accounts and do not exist on the NIS servers local /etc/passwd.

How do I update the home paths for NIS users?  I've tried usermod which doesn't work and says the accounts are not local.
