Issues with 10g R2 (10.2.0.5) database using ASM 11gR1(11.1.0.7) - Disk removal from a diskgrp - Com

OS - windows 2008 on vmware esx 35 virtual m/casm version is 11g (11.1.0.7)
database version 10.2.0.5

While disk was being removed from a diskgroup (just a diskgrp alteration command) , the databases went down. Had to bounce them back.
Error seen in db side
error 15064 detected in background process
ORA-15064: communication failure with ASM instance
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
error seen in asm side
KFNMS_CHECK_CLIENT found incompatible client (-11)
