Updating Price List With Various Exclusions

I'm attempting to update our price lists with a variety of exceptions.  The exceptions are not just certain groups, so the exceptions are some what sporatic.  Is it possible to populate the pricing interface table with records to end date an existing price list line, and then add a new record for the new item price with a new start date?  I've attempted to find reference to this, but so far I have found samples or a good reference to base off of.
Any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated!
