Moving production database to a new server

Hi :
I need to move production 9i (9.2.0.7) database to a new server. Its a 400GB database. Right now the RMAN backups are written to tapes. In my previous attempts to clone this database using RMAN DUPLICATE command, it took me about 7-8hrs to finish the whole process. What do you think is the best approach: cold backup or RMAN Duplicate?
Assuming one day allowable downtime, What are the risks involved and best practices in both approaches?
Please point me to right metalink or forum resources if any.
