GL:Importance of First open periond in secondary ledger's ledger options

Hello All,

Please let me know the importance of First ever opened period in secondary ledger processing options.
Please advise if we are configuring the secondary ledgers for existing primary ledgers and Go live is on Jan1,2012,which period should we keep as first ever opened period?

Currenlt,First ever open period for Primary ledger is Dec-09.

Can we keep the First ever opened period in secondary ledger as DEC-11?Would it cause any issue?
