Matrix Items

Help I am trying to setup Matrix items.  I followed the intructions below creating a small group of items.  When I try to enter an order I am getting an invalid item.  According to the instructions I should be able to enter the parent item only.

Is is possible to setup Matrix items from existing items and what would the steps be?  I do not want to have to recreate all of our items again.
