GL ledger Flexfield

 In R12 there is another additional GL Flexfield 'GL Ledger Flexfield'.It is the copy of accounting flex field segment with an added segment LEDGER_SEGMENT.Myquestion is what is the purpose of this segment and this key flexfield.I have studied it is used for FSG reports and recurring journals and so on.But how we can use this feature in FSG or others(for which it is included).
I need details about this
