ORA-03113 - no alert or trace files generated

We have just upgrade from 9i to 11gR1(11.1.0.7). SQLPLUS sessions that are idle for between 2-3 hours are getting a ORA-03113 erro when a new query is run. No alert logs or trace file entries are created, we set the EXPIRE_TIME=10 on the sqlnet.ora on the server but that doesn't seem to have changed anything. The problem was first found while doing a full package build for JD Edwards, which fails with the same error. I checked with the firewall folks and they say they don't see connections dropped on the DB ports. Does anyone have some ideas?
