delete the disk device after an ASM drop

we are migrating the database to a new storage array? we presented the new disks to ASM, added then to the diskgroups and dropped the old disks from the diskgroup. now we are trying to delete the devices from the OS but it reports back that they are still in use.

we deleted the character block devices and the disks disappear from ASM queries but the OS reports them still in use.

we are running Oracle Enterprise edition with ASM from the same Oracle Home version 10.2.0.4.

the OS is IBM AIX 6.1

we would like to be able to perform this operation in uptime - does anyone know of a solution?
