API not allowing update of date first hire > start date for rehire

Hi, Currently we are using hr_person_api.update_person to update the field date first hire but the API will validate and does not allow the date first hire  > start date for rehire.
We will encounter this error message "You must enter an original date of hire which is the same or earlier than the start date." for rehire case, as the date first hire (latest start date) definitely > start date of previous former committed hire.
Please advise if there is any other API or workaround we can use.
