customer notes

We are currently on R12.1.3 and would like to enter customer notes however, we do not want to implement the entire collections suite.  We have looked on the customer form and other forms and cannot find a place to add a few notes.  Is implementing the collections suite the only way to accomplish this?  We do not intend on using the Collections functionality so we would rather find an alternative.
