Proper way to open inventory period in R12

Seems like a silly question, what is the proper way to open an inventory period in R12. All of my periods for 2011 had already been open when we migrated and I never really thought about it. I am assuming this is done in the descrete inventory module even though the period close is only done through OPM GMF Period Close Process. Is this correct?
