Changing the External Unique Id on Account Record

Hello,

  We have a need to change the external Unique Id on the Account Record.

When we imported the Contacts against these Account Records, the association was determined by the "External Unique Id" on Account ( Account External Id field in Contact).

Is the Contact record internally linked by this external id where available ? or is the the Accounts Internal Row Id ?. If it is the latter, then I am thinking it should not affect the Account - Contact or Account Address relationships when the External Id on the Account is changed ?

Has anyone done this before ? If so, what are the challenges faced after such an update ?
