Usinf old Item numbers in SO

Hello All

There is a requirement wherein the client wants to use their old item numbers in sales orders, i know we can cross reference old item numbers with new with the item cross reference functionality, however i am not sure if by that we can use it in SO and what will be the effect on the accounting/transactions etc. Please help.
