Mystery error

in CRM On Demand - Reports and Dashboards (MOSC) Question

I am trying to update some nested case type column formulas for 2012 and I get this error:

"There was a problem retrieving the XML data: Forbidden"

which crashes the report writer... I've always thought this was related to overall size (some unknown limit) of the query statement produced

and overcome it (blindly...) by triming whitespace, etc.  but I am hoping that someone has more insight into what this error is and how to avoid it.
