adapcctl.sh times out clearing gantt cache directory

When running adopmnctl.sh startall, we saw that adapcctl.sh timed out , and  check of the os processes (unix) showed that it was attempting to run

rm -rf /app/applmgr/<SID>/apps/apps_st/comn/webapps/oacore/html/cabo/images/cache/gantt

Can anyone tell me what action in the application (EBS R12) creates the .png files in this directory, and why adapcctl takes so long to clear them out? Is it Ok to remove them manually? Our production system has nearly 400k of these files now, and I have read the having 'too many' can cause JVM issues. How many is "too many"?
