Script to find summarized beginning cost of catgory under a book type code

We want to create report showing total of beginning cost ,asset category wise for whole year. i tried writing query but it runs very very slow as the fa_deprn_detail table has millions of rows.

any body can share most efficient query to find beginning and ending cost of asset categories.
