Why "write" and "talk" say that the other user is not logged on when they are?

Hello,
I'm trying to take advantage of "write" or "talk".
After issuing "mesg y" and going to try the communication I get the following diagnostic message:

$ write other_usersame_host
other_usersame_host is not logged on.
