Why is the IN_MST_ITM_XLS Component Interface (CI) not uploading the Asset Profile ID?

Here is a question that came via a Service Request and which could have been addressed via the Community. So I'm posting it here for reference:

When using the Excel-to-Component-Interface Utility (ExcelToCI) with the IN_MST_ITM_XLS Component Interface (CI) in order to upload new Items in the system, the Asset Profile ID which is available in the Item Purchasing Attributes is not updated. Why is that?
