Querying multi-select picklist

We are considering the option of creating multi-select picklist field on the contact record.
Is there any suggestion/consideration especially regarding performance when querying?
Do you think that query millions of contacts by the multi-select picklist values will offer good performance?
Are multi-select picklist indexed?
