Blackout Practices

We run offline cold backups in the evening for many of our monitored databases.  I don't want to be sending out emails re: the availability of these instances during the backup but I don't want to miss any other alerts.  If I make a conservative guess as to how long the backups will take I may never recieve an email that the database had issues on startup after the backup.  What are other people doing to supress emails when the downtime is normal and to be expected?
