Question about creating a database link connecting to a user which has an @ in his name

I'm encountering a situation in which I am trying to create a database link to a non-oracle external database (using heterogeneous services and ODBC) in which the username itself contains the '@' character. I get an error message saying that the user <string that occurs before the @> is rejected.
The ODBC Data Sources application test reports that the connection can be made from there. I have inserted the userid and password into the ODBC connection definition, but that didn't matter...the system tried to use the connection username and password defined in the database link.

Changing the database link to not include any username or password yielded an attempt to connect to the remote database using the username and password of the connected user. I even tried creating a user with the username and password needed for the connection, and making a db link over from it, but I still got the same error.

Howdy, Stranger!
