ICL Puzzling me

Hi Experts,
We are planning to perform siebel 7.7 to siebel 8.1.1.6 and i have gone through various docs to understand the upgrade process. However i am still not so clear on the ICL process when to use or when to not to use below are the set of question that i have.

1) Whats the significance of Upgrade Ancestor ? and when it should be populated. I have observed when developers clone a object they usually dont populate this field.  

2)  As a pre-upgrade if i am expected to populate this field and if i am not maintaining and list of cloned objects how are we going to identify the cloned objects and how would i know which value to put in it.
