How do backorders/open POs affect replenishment?

Good day,
If an item is out of stock and a replenishment request has been generated and the resulting PO is still open, should new backorders for that item result in more replenishment requests?

Secondly, do backorders even affect the replenishment request requested quantities if they are created prior to the generation of the request?
