RMAN backup question

I have RMAN backup retention policy set to 30 days. I saw in the backup directory that the backup file in the directory was backup from Dec 8th 2011. It seems like those are more than 60 days old. Then I issue the delete obsolete device type disk; and it comes back says the command RMAN retention policy is set to recovery window of 30 days, no obsolete backups found. I am wondering so the retention policy of 30 days is different from the recovery window of 30 days? I am so confused. Gurus, anyone, please advice. Thank you very much.
