Export or backup all apex applications in a database with a script

I had the unfortunate experience of making a mistake while trying to revert to a prior version of Apex after af failed upgrade.  I then had to restore the database.  This was not too serious as it was a very small database, but would have been bad news if the database had been hundreds of gigabytes (or more) in size.

I would like to be able to run a script to backup everything related to Apex.  I am a DBA, not an Apex developer.  I know little about the content of the Apex applications.  I am looking for something simple, generic and foolproof.  Using the GUI to individually do each application, etc, is none of those.
