Web ADI (GL Journal) loses the 'happy face upload message confirmation

We are in process of implementing GL Web ADI, and during testing, the confiming 'happy face' returns a J.  I realize that the underlying character behind the happy face is a J, but I can't determine what causes the changes.  Has anyone encountered this before?  Thanks.
