OTM Archiving & Purging

I cannot seem to find any information on the necessity for Archiving and Purging data in OTM other than general statements like it "will help with performance". Are there any hard data, statistics, information out there on the Subject to support that claim or what happens if OTM is not archived/purged? I have searched Oracle My Support, OTMfaq and a few other avenues and have come up empty. Any assitance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
