Unable to download to export excel when report has more than 40+ columns

Is there a setting in the APEX environment that will allow me to download to excel reports with more than 40+ columns.  I get the following oracle error at around 43-45 columns.

ora-06502:PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small.  

I only get this error downloading to excel.  downloading a .html or .csv file does works just fine.

The problem does not seem to vary with the number of rows, simply by the number of columns.  Any help would be appreciated.
