After patching on 3/5/12, our solaris 10 box appears to not allow hummingbird exceed to connect

Hi,  I'm not sure why, but the latest round of patches seems to have broken our previously-working xterm server (hummingbird exceed).
Since it was working previous to the patches I am wondering if anybody else has seen this happen.
When I look at the exceed troubleshooting logs, I see "connection refused on socket 21".
When I look at "netstat -a", I don't see socket 21 blocked (must confess I don't know what that would look like, but I don't
see a "21" by itself in the result).
When I start exceed, the host selection window opens, listing the machines - and when I click on a non-patched solaris box,

Howdy, Stranger!
