ReUsing the Star Item number created if same cofiguration is selected Or renaming it once created

Hi Friends

I have a specific requirement ,for CTO items in the current system , OM team has a method of naming CTO item, Its a 15 digit number and each digit represents something , When they move to Oracle , they want to use the configurator but asking that , as configurator will create new start Item number and there resources will have hard time , so please help me understand if there is any way to use configurator but still maintain the 15 digit number and link it to configurator.
