Middleware?

 Hello,
Can anyone explain why middleware is used for import data in GL interface from the other source?Actually i am in bank and there are three applications.Oracle and other two(A and .

The data is import into middleware from A and B system.and then gl_interface import data from middleware.It is only the purpose of data import/export utility?
