restore from hot backup

I ran a hot backup by putting all the tablespace to backup mode, copy the datafile to backup location, and then end backup mode. backup the controlfile and switch log file. If I want to restore the database to a point in time using this copy of hot backup, what are the steps? Are there any document on the website I can find? Also, I am still foggy about the concept of hot backup. Supposedly, for hot backup, users can still access the system and modify the data, how would the hot backup keep data consistent? Please advice. Thank you
