How to remove existing values from a picklist when it reaches the maximum of 1000 values.

Hi, Would appreciate if any of you know of the way how to remove existing values from a picklist. We currently reaches the limit of 1000 values in our picklist. We need to add more to the picklist but we cannot. We can disable unused ones but that still does not help. Thank you for any information. Minh.
