How contract number modifier is determined when it is renewed?

Hi All,

How contract number modifier is determined when it is renewed?

For example, when i renew a contract, the contract number modifier i get is "R27-MAR-12 04:24:23".

My question is how this format is used?
Is there any setup for Contract number modifier ?
I can see a setup for contract number in "Autonumbering". but not for Contract number modifier. Why ?
