Picklist question - ID values vs. Picklist value

I've been a CRMOD admin for years, so I'm a bit surprised I don't have a good answer for this one.
I've always set up picklists so that the ID and Picklist value match.  If I make a typo, I disable the bad one and create another entry.  My client wants to intentionally make the ID and Picklist value differ.  This doesn't feel right to me and I've never done it.  So, experts, what are the pro/con of having the ID and Picklist values differ?  What doesn't work?  Searching?  Sorting?  Reports?
