Landed Cost Best Practices for Imports

What is the best practice for setting up landed cost for importing goods from China to US?  We want to receive goods by vessel (e.g. ship), container on ship and inventory in container.  How do companies calculate landed cost based on this? Do they use the standard Landed Cost Revisions form or do they create modifications and interfaces?  If so, which products are used for interfaces.
