accessing list of favorite records

Is there a way to access the list of user's favorite records?  I know I can create an additional field/multi-select type picklist (or use account type , but was wondering if the favorites list could be leveraged.)

Basically, I'm trying to segment accounts or group accounts - preferrably by each user's selection.  How have you created segments in the past?
