Oracle Method of Installing Patches

Greetings,

I have a group of DBA's that install patches from the UNIX command line.  In the past (years ago) they would be asked to install a patch and would have to back out because their method would stop and require another patch not in pre requisite listing.

Now Oracle has much improved.  What is the Oracle recommended method to install Patches?  I know little of Patch Wizard in OAM but this is available option for us.  We are looking to leverage the Oracle functions that would search our application and provide output reports that would show us what patches our application may benefit to install or be at risk of "not having" in our application.
