SSH for 11gr1 and 11gr2

Can some one give a brief explanation on why we need SSH passwordless on RAC 11gr1 and 11gr2?

I can think it let you run patching/upgrading on all nodes from one node. How about pathing without passwordless? Is it ok to do just on each node one by one?
