Single source of truth

in Receivables - EBS (MOSC) Question
Hi,
Can anyone clarify the use of single source of truth (SST)?  I find the manuals a little vague on exactly what it can be used for. 

I understand that source system management (SSM) allows us to keep track of parties created from data supplied by different sources.  I think SST allows us to decide which source is the most relevant for an attribute at the person/organization profile level.  I don't understand how I could end up with profile attributes from more than one source for a single party.
