Serial Connections

I'm having trouble gaining access to the serial port of the 6140 controller. I've set the serial interface to a buad rate 34800, with 8 data bits, no parity and no flow control, and stop bit to 1 as per the directions along with I'm running VT100 emulation, yet when I try to run the serial connection sometimes I get garbage and sometimes it will show the menu, however when I press the 'S' key the system won't respond. Any suggestions?
