Customize related information list

The related list for opportunities in the account or contact detailed screen is sorted on record creation (as far as I can see).I would like to sort this list, placing the most recent opportunity on top.
I will need to do that using a report which will give me the same functionality as the standard related list.
Can anyone point me toward a document that can help me to accomplish this? Or maybe make the needed coding available to me?
