Followup questions on primary Data Guard instance archive logs

1) What, if any,  is Oracle's best practice for running RMAN backups in a Data Guard environment?  Run the backup on the primary or stand by or both?  2) If I run the RMAN backup on the standby database and no backup on the primary, I want to delete the primary archive logs once the standby backup has backed up the standby logs.  Is RMAN the best means to do this?
