Hierarchy decision for self-service

We are currently in the process of implementing employee and manager self-service (public sector), we currently use position based hierarchy for approvals and were wondering what the advantages are of using supervisor hierarchy since it comes like that out of the box.  Are there any limitations to using position hierarcy for self-service?
